  6.  
  7.     This file contains a brief listing of new features and other
  8.     changes from PC-Vault 4.4w.  If you are not already familiar with
  9.     version 4.4w, please skip this file and read your Administrator's
  10.     manual.

  13.               New In PC-Vault and PC-Vault Plus Version 4.5
  14.      
  15.     The implementation of Maximum Floppy Boot Protection is
  16.     completely new and uses totally different techniques from those
  17.     used in prior versions.  It will be much more secure against a
  18.     hacker who is trying to break in.  In addition, we expect it will
  19.     be more compatible with today's variety of disks, controllers,
  20.     and software.    
  21.      
  22.     Substantially improved compatibility with OnTrack's Disk Manager.
  23.      
  24.     Except on XTs, use of Password Ageing no longer requires that
  25.     PC-VAULT.EXE be resident on the hard drive, nor does it require
  26.     the PC-VAULT/A statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT. 
  27.      
  28.     The administrator can prohibit users from changing the system
  29.     date and time.  Note:  It is always possible for a program to
  30.     write CMOS memory directly, but we do not know of any that do. 
  31.     In any event, the clock regression rules will cause all passwords
  32.     to expire if the clock has regressed by more than four hours. 
  33.     (See menu item T in Select Options.) 
  34.      
  35.     When selecting password ageing, the administrator can choose
  36.     whether or not the administrator password will expire. 
  37.      
  38.     HelpUser can now be used to grant either Administrator, or User 1
  39.     access to a PC. 
  40.      
  41.     WHO /L will display the name of the current user. 
  42.      
  43.     WHO /E will cause an environment variable to be defined:
  44.     PCVU=username. This is very useful in batch files.  Example:
  45.                                CD \%PCVU% 
  46.      
  47.     The number of users in addition to the administrator has been
  48.     increased to 12. 
  49.      
  50.     The LOGOFF utility has been added.  Running LOGOFF will log you
  51.     off of the computer, and give another user the opportunity to
  52.     logon without rebooting.  Simply type LOGOFF at the DOS prompt. 
  53.     After the new user logs on, the DOS prompt will re-appear.  The
  54.     default drive will be the one from which DOS was booted.  The
  55.     default directory will be the root directory. 
  56.      
  57.     It is no longer necessary to use the special display blanking
  58.     option with Windows and VGA.

  63.     The Windows 32 bit disk driver (also known as FastDisk and
  64.     WDCTRL) will now load and work correctly. 
  65.      
  66.     If one of the following comments is placed in the CONFIG.SYS file
  67.     prior to installing PC-Vault, PC-Vault will place its DEVICE
  68.     statement on the line following the comment.

  74.     The second comment line will cause PC-Vault to use a DOS 5.0
  75.     DEVICEHIGH statement.  This feature makes removal and
  76.     reinstallation of PC-Vault easier in those situations where the
  77.     device statement should not be first, or where a special device
  78.     statement is required by a memory manager such as QEMM.  Please
  79.     see the administrator's manual for additional information.
  80.      
  81.     If a virus invades your master boot record (boot sector) or it is
  82.     otherwise trashed, PC-Vault will recognize the condition and ask
  83.     if you would like for PC-Vault to rebuild it for you. 
  84.      
  85.     VIOLS /L will now display the date and time of the user's last
  86.     logon.  This will alert a user that someone else knows his/her
  87.     password and uses the computer at times when the legal user is
  88.     away. 
  89.      
  90.     If the administrator states that the person installing PC-Vault
  91.     is to be the administrator (See PC-Vault /P in your manual), he
  92.     may also require that the administrator password be entered
  93.     before PC-Vault will install. This will prevent unauthorized
  94.     persons from installing PC-Vault, and ensure that the installer
  95.     knows the administrator password.

  100.                      New In PC-Vault Plus Version 4.5
  101.  
  102.     A new line on the Directory Access Control screen allows the
  103.     administrator to control each user's permissions will have to new
  104.     level 1 sub-directories between their creation and the time when
  105.     he actually assigns permissions to them.
  106.      
  107.     Execute access is both necessary and sufficient to execute
  108.     programs under Windows (this is a bug fix). 
  109.      
  110.     The log file, ACCESS.SYS, is now a locked file.  FLUSHLOG now has
  111.     a /U switch which unlocks the log file.  If you delete or rename
  112.     the log file a new locked log file will be created when new
  113.     entries need to be added.

  117.     The global .EXE/.COM access control has been replaced with
  118.     control for each root & 1st level directory.  (See the PC-Vault
  119.     Plus main menu's D option.)

  121.     Directory permissions will be remembered across removal and
  122.     subsequent re-installation.
  123.      
  124.     Directory permissions changes are effective immediately.  No
  125.     re-boot is required unless total number of root and first level
  126.     sub-directories has been increased since the last boot.  In this
  127.     case, an informative message will be displayed.

  129.     Changes in file accesses to be logged are effective immediately.

  132.                          New in the EXEC Program
  133.  
  134.     Two new parameters have been added to the EXEC program.  Their
  135.     use is somewhat technical, and most users can skip the following
  136.     description.  The EXEC command line now has the form:
  137.  
  138.     EXEC [/R] [/Ln] [/Tn] /drive:\full_path_name\prog.ext param-list
  139.  
  140.     The new parameters, /L and /T allow the program started by EXEC
  141.     to execute other programs.  /Tn allows a total of n programs to
  142.     be executed, additional execution attempts will fail.  The n may
  143.     be any number from 0 (the default) through 9.  This parameter is
  144.     necessary to start Windows 3.1, for example, because it asks DOS
  145.     to execute 2 or 3 programs (Standard or 386 modes) during its
  146.     startup.  Once started windows could execute any number of
  147.     Windows programs, but no DOS programs since that would exceed the
  148.     selected value of a properly chosen n.

  150.     The /Ln parameter allows the program started by EXEC to execute
  151.     another program, which may execute another program, etc. to a
  152.     depth of n levels. Thus if EXEC /L1 started a menu program (level
  153.     0), the menu program could execute any number of other programs
  154.     (all at level 1).  The level 1 programs started by the menu
  155.     program could not execute any other programs because a depth of
  156.     level 2 would not be allowed.  The n may be any number from 0
  157.     (the default) through 9.
